  • The Lord Silkin School has among the finest facilities for Information and Communication Technology in the South  Telford area.
  • Every student at The Lord Silkin School has access to up-to-date computers and accessories in a range of subjects and a variety of contexts.
  • Every student has the opportunity to develop a range of basic Information and Communication Technology skills that  they will build on as they progress through the school.
  • Every student is encouraged to understand how Information  and Communication Technology affects everyday life.
  • Every student know’s  when and how Information and Communication Technology can be an appropriate tool for solving problems.

As a school we are very fortunate to be equipped with a total of 260 networked computers.  Our network is linked to the Telford and Wrekin Intranet which provides us with firewalled access to the Internet and a wealth of educational software.  The NGFL facility is available for all subject areas to book for their classes.  There are two main ICT areas for discrete ICT lessons and the NGFL room for subject areas to book.  In addition all departments have access to at least one networked computer in their area and in some cases small suites of up to 14 computers.  The library also has its own internet facilities.  There is a variety of printers including a colour laser printer and plotter.  We also have projectors, interactive whiteboards, digital cameras, scanners and videoconferencing equipment.

Every student and member of staff has their own e-mail account and access to the Internet.

We use a range of software but have Windows XP and Microsoft Office as our standard provision on all networked machines and most others.  Apart from word processing, presentations, spreadsheets, databases and desk top publishing, students have access to paint programs, design programs and control facilities.

The department has four experienced ICT specialists, and there are many other members of staff who work in other subject areas but who have expertise in the delivery of ICT as a tool within their subject area

The National Curriculum includes Information and Communication Technology as a foundation subject at all Key Stages.

On arrival at The Lord Silkin School, every student is given an ICT folder that will be used throughout Key Stages 3 for collecting work and information about achievements within ICT lessons.  These folders are used to provide evidence of ICT capability at the end of Key Stage 3 and are the basis for the award of a particular level.

This process is started in Year 7 when students spend one hour a week with specialist ICT staff to develop and assess their ICT skills.  During Years 8 and 9 they continue discrete ICT developing their capability within contexts such as a Bike Shop.

In Key Stage 4 all students have the opportunity for certification in Key Skills in ICT at either Level 1 or 2.  Many students also opt to study ICT at GCSE where examination results have been consistently excellent and students perform well.  They are well-motivated and thoroughly enjoy exploring the ways in which ICT can be used in a variety of contexts. A vocational course is also available which is the equivalent of 2 GCSE’s.

A large number of our past students have taken their knowledge and skills in ICT into college and employment and applied them successfully to new situations.
